Voice of Art - GATS (Graffiti Against The System)

After driving past some of GATS work the other day, I decided to explore and see what he's been up to and stumbled upon this really cool series of documentaries. I have been mesmerized ever since, mostly because I have a soft spot for all things Oakland and these do not disappoint. Take a look, I included all of the four part series after the jump.

Oakland's First Friday Documentary

"A portrait of a city rated as a top 5 destination & a top 5 most dangerous cities in the U.S. Once a month, those two realities meet." 

I am super excited that a film is being made to capture this time and place and document this art movement. Oakland's First Fridays is definitely something to be experienced.

Seize the day

Last weekend, I stopped by Loakal gallery to check out the install of their latest show Carpe Diem. The project entails a room full of artists, including one of my creative crushes Eddie Colla an 8 ft by 8 ft canvas and 24 hours to make the magic happen. I was really excited to get to see the artists at work, super inspiring. The show opens next week during monthly Oakland's Art Murmur and I'm stoked to see how everything turns out.

Abando Warehouse Tour

Working at Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive.  I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to go on a tour of the future site of BAMPFA, which currently is an abandoned warehouse dripping with graffiti and other deliciousness.  This appealed to a.) and my love of warehouses and b.) my obsession with all things old and abandoned turned amazing...

A few weeks ago a good friend of mine blindfolded me, threw me in the trunk of her car and drove me to an old, abandoned warehouse...

Barry Mcgee, lucky me....

During my time working at Berkeley Art Museum, I was luck enough to be present during the installation of the Barry Mcgee exhibit. The install lasted for weeks and took over the majority of the gallery. I remember the day they hauled in a full sized van and set up the animatronics. It was so exciting coming in every day seeing new work done and trying to catch a glimpse of 'ol Mr. Mcgee in action.
